I've noticed that I haven't posted any DIY posts in a while so I'm posting this before I post my pumpkin oatmeal recipe {It's fall so be prepared for more pumpkin recipes} or a recipe for delicious (but healthy) breakfast cookies.
My mom is drinking coffee again which means I can stop using my mini coffee maker. I have noticed a lot of DIY recipes using coffee grounds floating around the web and decided that since we were just throwing away the grounds to save a batch and make something with it. Here is a list of 21 other ways to use leftover coffee grounds.
In the photos, I used some dark chocolate covered coffee beans. There are some sugar scrub recipes out there where you can use it in the shower and eat it if you wanted (i.e chocolate scrub or brown sugar/vanilla scrub), but I personally wouldn't eat the scrub.
I've been reading different blogs that have recipes for recipe to make good iced coffee and discovered that there are some interesting ways to "brew" coffee without even using a coffee maker. I bought a product to make one version of coffee and I'll try the other ways too and post about which technique I liked best probably in the next 2 weeks.

P.S. This has nothing to do with this post, but I thought that I would share. I'm a big animal lover, but horses, pit bulls, and big cats are at the top my list of favorites. Not far from us is a lovely place called In-Sync Exotics where they rescue big cats from bad situations and let them live the rest of their life out in peace. Vicky, the owner has been shown on several episodes of animal rescues and animal cops where she took in some cats. We haven't actually visited in a while, but we do get their newsletter to update us on what's going on and they also have special events on holidays for the whole family to have fun. The thing is when caring for so many large animals (mostly carnivores) it isn't cheap and they are having an event where if you donate $25 or more to help this great place every donation will be matched by Communities of North Texas until 12pm tonight. Here is the link if you want to donate. Communities Foundation of Texas will match donations based on the total matching pool available and the total amount of donations raised. They will also be giving out special prizes between $1,000 and $10,000!! Even if you miss the deadline, don't worry you can donate to help the animals directly here.
Coffee Scrub

Created by Rayna of Curious Country Cook
1/2 cup fine coffee grounds
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup coconut oil, melted.*
-Method 1:
Use dry pre-ground coffee or ground your own coffee beans.
-Method 2:
Use the leftover grounds that you used to make your breakfast coffee because they are still very aromatic. If you use this method, it's best to dry out the grounds a day or more. If you don't dry out the grounds, then you will just need to use less oil since it will still have moisture.
Instructions:
In a small bowl, mix everything until combined and store in a jar or container.
You could either store the scrub in the fridge or at room temperature.
To Use: Stir the scrub, scoop a spoonful into damp hands before applying it to damp skin , rub in a circular motion and rinse well. You'll be left with a smooth, soft, great smelling hands and body.
Notes:
*You could use any light oil you have on hand like extra virgin olive oil, canola oil, or walnut oil.
-If you use coconut oil and store it in the fridge, let the scrub sit out for 20 minutes or so since coconut oil gets hard when cold.
How long does this scrub last? I saw on LiveStrong that it is only good 2 weeks. That doesn't seem long.
ReplyDeleteIt should stay good for up to 2 months or so as long as you chill it when you aren't using it.
